Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) and the Search and Rescue Satellite System have been discussed here at Boating and Sailing a number of times. The National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA) is the parent agency of the National Weather Service (NWS), an organization that operates an extensive fleet of weather observation satellites. These geostationary and polar orbiting satellites collect climate and weather related information around the clock.

What many people don’t realize is that many of the orbiting NOAA satellites carry an electronics package that can detect and report back information transmitted by EPIRBs broadcasting position information during a boating or other emergency. Radio locator beacons of different forms are available to hikers, pilots and mariners.
