Euro 2008
The highlight of this extraordinary month is on the pitch in Austria and Switzerland at Euro 2008. The tournament, which occurs every four years, includes sixteen European nations and culminates with the crowning of the champions of the continent. The Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, and Spain appear to be the squads to beat, as all four looked formidable in their opening games. Other powerhouses, however, including France, the Czech Republic, defending champion Greece, and World Cup champion Italy must not be overlooked. Both Greece and Italy suffered terrible losses to open play, but the tournament is forgiving, as both teams will have opportunities to regroup and advance.
The Stanley Cup Finals
Detroit beat Pittsburgh in an entertaining six-game series that introduced hockey’s savior, 20-year-old Sidney Crosby, to the sport’s biggest stage, but the veteran Detroit Red Wings proved to be too much for the young Penguins to overcome. The NHL, still attempting to recover from the disastrous lockout during the 2004-05 season, desperately needed a marquee matchup in the Finals, and this series provided just that. However, as long as the league’s cable rights belong to Versus, a channel that often requires a user’s guide to find on a cable box, the sport will remain second-tier in the United States.
