The term “threnody” originates from the Greek “thanatos” meaning death, plus “oide” meaning song.
First Stanza: “The south-wind brings”
In the first stanza, the speaker remarks, “The south-wind “brings / Life, sunshine, and desire,” but it will no longer bring those things to his son, because “over the dead [the south-wind] has no power.” Then the speaker makes it clear that he is bereaved: “And, looking over the hills, I mourn / The darling who shall not return.”
Second Stanza: “I see my empty house”
The world looks bleak to this speaker; his house seems empty without “the wondrous child.” He again repeats the loss of the boy, who “has disappeared from the Day’s eye.” The proud, grieving father also mourns, because the boy was “gracious” and “adorn[ed] / The world whereinto he was born.”
