Cameron’s first full-length feature as a director was the horror sequel Piranha Part Two: The Spawning in 1981. Based on the unlikely premise that flying piranhas developed by the military had escaped in the vicinity of a fishing competition, the film failed even to live up to its not very prestigious predecessor, Piranha. Although Cameron referred to the film as "the finest flying killer fish horror-comedy ever made" on the commentary to a later movie, he is clearly less than proud of it, often referring to The Terminator as his first movie.
James Cameron Directs Aliens
Made three years after the piranha movie in 1984, The Terminator was co-written by Cameron with Gale Ann Hurd. The movie tells the story of a psychotic cyborg (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, in the role that shot him to fame) sent from the future to assassinate the mother of a future resistance leader in the battle between man and machine. Despite a relatively low budget for an action thriller of around $6.5 million, The Terminator grossed over $38 million worldwide, and has been consistently nominated as one the best films in its genre. In 2008 the movie was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
